But here, experience is immanent subjective experience reconceived as the duration. The duration completes the reversal of Platonism and shows the true meaning of the modern elevation of the soul. The Bergsonian duration transforms the concept of immanence. We have moved beyond Cartesianism. Let us again examine the Bergsonian duration. As we saw in the “Summary-Commentary” in “Introduction to Metaphysics,” Bergson says that the duration consists in “a multiplicity like no other” (CENT: 1402/ CM: 168; my emphasis).

The Real Duration We just saw that psychological analysis results in the “illusion” of what the self is: immobile elements and their expressions. The illusion also results in an unreal duration insofar as objective time (clock time) represents change as spatial and homogeneous: the thing moves through time means 2 6 · E a r ly T w e n t i e t h- C e n t u ry C o n t i n e n ta l P h i l o s op h y that the same thing occupies different points (CENT: 1411–12/CM: 179). For Bergson, however, there is no psychical state that does not change at every instant, since there is no consciousness without memory, since there is “no continuation of a state without the addition, to the present feeling, of the memory of past moments” (CENT: 1411/CM: 179).

Being unique, the duration cannot be conceived by means of resemblances and comparisons. It is even inexpressible (CENT: 1395/CM: 161). Nevertheless, we are able to get closer to what duration is by means of images (CENT: 1355–56/CM: 118). For Bergson, images are intermediary between intuition 2 0 · E a r ly T w e n t i e t h- C e n t u ry C o n t i n e n ta l P h i l o s op h y and the elaboration of the intuition in words and concepts (CENT: 1347/ CM: 109). Here, in “Introduction to Metaphysics,” Bergson provides three images.
